Jack and I spent a few hours at San Simeon
excavating the cliff with his tool.
He discovered crystals in this crack of quartz.

Today we hiked down to Hazards Beach
near Montana de Oro with my friends
Chris and Lucy.
The first hazard was a tree that
proved more of a challenge for
Jack to climb down.
He made it with Arlos help.
They enjoyed sliding down the sand dune,
the same one that proved a hazard to Ben,
Chris's son who broke his leg here
a few years ago.
We ended with big burgers for all
at Sylvester's.
On the way home we stopped briefly at the
Elfin Forest. The boys like the story of
how, many years ago when Chris and I were traveling
with our kids in northern California, we "forced" them to go
and see the Pygmy Forest. They were not impressed.
Jack and Arlo's dad, Cameron, still remembers that.
Then, as we approached Cambria we saw the fire.
We found that it was behind the town on Bridge street.
Fortunately they contained it to 3 acres and had it out
by evening. Watching the air support was interesting.
I took this picture coming down Burton Drive.
