Here are some of the highlights so far. Finding a nearly empty campground on a river with a view of Mt Shasta on the Labor day weekend (Sims Creek), Collier mining museum, Sisters Music festival, visiting with my brother Simon and music friends, Ken and Kathy in Bend, hiking up the Deschutes river and Smith Rock, Trillium Lake and the great Columbia River Gorge, HUGE fish...and much more...later
Sims flats, river hike and fall colors
Labor day weekend...and easy camping !!!
We rarely make reservations and we have the best luck
finding wonderful places available.
Collier mining museum State Park campground
Our 2nd time climbing the Obsidian Mountain.
A great campsite in Little Crater on the shores of Lake Paulina
It was windy and cooler and so we made potato soup for lunch.
Then we hiked to view Little Crater
A wonderful dramatic sundown
And Mikes spaghetti for dinner.
The next morning there was frost on the ground
and fog on the lake which didn't stop a couple of kayakers
We arrived at Sisters Creekside campground
and my brother Simon joined us for a visit.
The next day the Sisters folk festival began.
The campground is in a beautiful little park in the town
and we walked or biked to the 11 music venues
We enjoyed Laurie Lewis with Nina Gerber
in the garden setting the first evening at the Five Pines lodge.
These 3 brothers from Nova Scotia, the East Pointers, also wowed us.
Also Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas had a wonderful Scottish fiddle and cello sound.
The village green area had many booths,
including this one representing the luthier program at the high school
In the walk in tent area we met PCT hikers
We enjoyed great performances by Richard Thompson, Shawn Mullins,
The Molly Tuttle Band, and we danced the night away with Los TexManiacs
and Scott Pemberton, who played a guitar in a way I had never seen before!!
After 3 days of great music it was time to say goodbye to our friends from So Cal.
Us girls kicked up our heels and the boys talked music.
Then it was off to Bend to stay a few days with Ken and Kathy,
who live part time in Cambria and part time in Bend.
Ken showed us the photo in the elevator
We explored the pathway along the Deschutes River
with snow capped mountains in the background
We hiked further up the river the next day
Their condo is in a really neat location, the historic Mill area.
Right on the river pathway with upscale shopping and restaurants nearby
in the old mill. The towers in the background being the old mill,
now an REI store.
That evening we celebrated Kens 70th birthday
with a song we wrote and sang to him.
Then after cake and gifts we moved around their bedroom furniture !!
Kathy only had to mention it and we sprung into action
Lots of fun...and Ken got to sleep in a new place!!!
The next day we headed out to Smith Rock.
Up, down and along the Crooked River
A lovely well earned lunch after.
Mike and Ken found the horseshoe pit.
We explored a gorge area
Then had to say goodbye the next day.
After leaving Bend and heading north we discovered
lovely little Trillium Lake sitting in the shadow of Mt. Hood
We had this view of Mt Hood as we ate a good dinner
The next day we hiked all the way around the lake
We encountered a lucky local fisherman
Interesting clouds and...smores
It rained most of the next day which allowed us to read cozily inside
with brief forays outside to view a misty lake.
The following day we headed up the road
towards Mt Hood to the historic Timberline lodge.
This is another crossing point for the PCT
and we were able to talk to a few hikers,
drying out their equipment and sipping
the free coffee provided by the lodge.
It warmed us to think of this majestic lodge
offering hospitality to these hikers.
Then we spied in on a wedding happening
on the outside patio. No view of Mt. Hood today
Crossed over the White River
We are in Apple country
